Field House Brewing – Oldhand Flat White Oatmeal Stout

Overview

Field House Brewing – Oldhand Flat White Oatmeal Stout Review

Silky smooth, with a rich, decadent mouthfeel. That’s not marketing copy; that’s the legitimate impression this beer leaves on the stout lover. In fact, those that don’t think they like dark beers, but like coffee and chocolate, might find that they very much like what this brew has to offer.

This stout is more or less a collab, given the participation of Abbotsford’s Old Hand Coffee. It starts as an oatmeal stout, which given the properties of oats will always tend to be silkier than a straight dry stout. After the brew, lactose and vanilla are added to further mellow it out, then it’s left to sit on and absorb Old Hand’s coffee beans.

By the way, the reference to Flat White is due to the aforementioned creaminess of this beverage. Here’s how this coffee style is defined in Wikipedia:

flat white is a coffee drink consisting of espresso with microfoam (steamed milk with small, fine bubbles and a glossy or velvety consistency). It is comparable to a latte, but smaller in volume and with less microfoam, therefore having a higher proportion of coffee to milk, and milk that is more velvety in consistency – allowing the espresso to dominate the flavour, while being supported by the milk.

“More velvety”. Despite its impressive flavour, that’s the star quality of this drink. That’s why it gets full marks for palate in our star ratings below.
