Camp Beer Co. – Copa Da Floresta Review

Recently, the BeerSeekers visited Camp Beer in Langley, and brought home a four-pack of a spanking new brew: the Copa Da Floresta Catharina Sour: Kiwi & Passionfruit. Unusually, we actually brought home two four-packs.

Why was this? Because Camp’s sour beers have proven to be so popular locally that they’re guaranteed to disappear quickly. This was the case with their Forager Bumbleberry Sour, as reviewed by us last month. That is the primary tragedy of Camp brewing: if you’re not close to their Langley base, you may not realize that they are a top-flight BC brewery.

For his part, Head Brewer Dave Henry is now clearly a professional of the first order. He has graduated from leading a homebrew club to steering a commercial operation with surprising style and consistency.

Now to the beer. This beverage pours a slighly hazy gold with an orangey tinge.

The aroma of kiwi is distinctively present; it would not be necessary to read the label to detect it. Also there is passion fruit, melon, and a hint of vanilla.

The flavour is of course tart and fruity, with orange and kiwi. It’s somewhat ascorbic, with the expected pleasantly acidic bite on the palate.

Apparently, this Kiwi & Passionfruit beer is not the only Copa Da Floresta that Camp has created. On their website is a version with guava and orange.

Normally our review template’s highest ‘enjoyability’ rating is “I am leaving right now to get more.” In this instance, for the first time, we actually started out with more and that still wasn’t enough. Two people who almost never drink the same beer twice in a row finished a four-pack more or less out of necessity. Therefore, we rate this sour beer as ‘Embarassingly Drinkable.”
