Yellow Dog x Trolley 5 Fist Bump Blackberry Red IPA

Yellow Dog x Trolley 5 Fist Bump Blackberry Red IPA Review

Here’s a collaboration with a fun story. Two breweries with the same name for a beer– High 5–put their hands together and came up with a fist bump.

The liquid pours a very attractive cloudy red, looking much like a drinkable glass of raspberry jam. The head dissipates fairly quickly, yet the beer has significant mouthfeel.

You’d expect a beer that looks and sounds like a typical fruit beer to be much sweeter than this is. Indeed, on the nose it there is sweetness, even candy. But on the palate it seemed highly attenuated, or at least balanced due to the IPA’s inherent hoppiness.

Like other hazy IPAs, this unfiltered beer benefits from a “New England Roll”–rolling the can on its side to blend the contents (a gentler version of the “shake before opening” routine you’re used to with fruit juices). If you don’t, you’ll find that the lees (yeasty part that’s settled at the bottom of the can) are pretty thick and bitter!

Looks like a drinkable glass of raspberry jam. But more balanced than sweet due to the IPA’s inherent hoppiness.

Pros

  • Amazing appearance
  • Fairly balanced due to the IPA’s inherent hoppiness.
  • Not overly sweet

  • Some may not like the yeasty dregs in their unfiltered can
