Spinnakers Brewpub – Pew! Pew! Pew! Kettle Sour Review

As Canada’s first brewpub, with a reputation founded on ‘Real Ale’, Spinnakers isn’t known for sours. But that’s why we do beer reviews here on Beer Me BC: so you’ll find out things you didn’t know. So, now that we know Spins makes sours, what did we think of their Pew! Pew! Pew! Kettle Sour?

First off, the name was divisive. One of us BeerSeekers thought the name was silly. To her consternation, the other kept saying it all night. Once you start saying “Pew! Pew! Pew!” it can be kind of hard to stop. Sorry, dear.

Anyway, Pew! poured slightly cloudy gold with the billowing head pictured here, which eventually dissipated completely (as one would expect with a sour ale).

On the nose, there was a fresh, clean aroma. It was tart and fruity, with nice white wine and kiwi notes.

On the palate, it was tart with melon, canteloupe, and guava notes, stone fruit (peach/apricot), and subtle pear in the finish.

To this day, Spinnakers prints the line ‘Let No Body Thirst For The Taste Of A Real Ale’ on its products. That includes Pew! Pew! Pew!, which is pretty far from the original UK-inspired, cask-centric ‘Real Ale’ foundation Spins was built on. However, there’s no need to fear that sours aren’t their thing. In fact, Pew! Pew! Pew! is one of the most addictive fruity, tart ales we’ve had in a while.
