Phillips Brewing – Village Hero Dry Hopped Wheat

Phillips Brewing – Village Hero Dry Hopped Wheat Review

Last year, Phillips Brewing & Malting Co and Vancouver Whitecaps FC partnered up to release a beer called Villager. Last Friday, in light of COVID-19, Phillips Brewing announced this year’s fundraising collab.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Phillips Brewing and Carson Ting have collaborated to launch a limited-edition dry-hopped wheat beer called Village Hero, created to fundraise for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. The beer’s label design features Ting’s famed It Takes A Village artwork, which pays homage to Vancouver’s 7 p.m. community cheers for the frontline heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Whitecaps launched the charity art piece a month ago and raised over $100,000 inside the first two-and-a-half days for the Food Bank’s much-needed benefit.

The beer has a distinctive, funky nose, presumably from the dry hopping. It features herbal hop flavours while being piney and slightly astringent on the palate.

Phillips Brewing notes, “This special release craft brew is bright, crisp, and refreshing. It has all the hops and flavour of an IPA, but all of the lightness and drinkability of a blonde ale or American wheat ale. Low ABV makes for some easy, easy drinking.”

We agree with most of that. Perhaps not all the flavour of an IPA, but Village Hero is a refreshing summer wheat beer with a funky, dry-hopped nose.

Village Hero beer can be purchased at select private liquor stores, subject to availability and delivery schedules. Find a list of them here.

Also, y ou can collect the artwork and contribute directly to the cause as well! The It Takes A Village artwork is still available at while supplies last.
