Old Yale – Himalayan Salted Caramel Porter Review

PRESENTED BY JAK’S BEER, WINE, SPIRITS
From the Winter  2020 edition of the What’s Brewing Tasting Panel

Sometimes a brewery chooses a great new beer to brew seasonally for its customers. Other times, customers choose a great new seasonal beer and tell their brewery it better keep coming back. That was the case when Chilliwack’s Old Yale Brewing released Himalayan Salted Caramel Porter as part of their 12 Days of Beermas program in December 2016. As we previously published, Old Yale noted that “it’s quickly become one of our most requested brews.

This beer was recently showcased as part of What’s Brewing magazine’s Winter 2020 issue Tasting Panel review of “Dessert Beers.” It did well, earning a solid score and comments like “I could drink this whole beer and have another without thinking about it” from Mike the BeerRater. Let’s see how this holiday favourite fared in our own taste test.

Himalayan poured a deep, dark brown, close to black, with a pillowy soft tan head. Adhering to its promise, it was slightly saline on the nose. There was also a distinct liquorice aroma, with subtle peppery notes.

On the palate, it was soft and creamy with a juicy malt backbone. The porter was very chocolatey with coffee and caramel notes. It was a bit sharper than some porters due to the liquorice and pepper bite, and the hint of salinity added just a bit of zing on the palate.

Most of all, Himalayan is just delicious. We agree with Mike, and the proof was that we didn’t stop at one. Fortunately, you can find it in a four-pack at many a liquor store around BC. Highly recommended.
