Mariner Brewing – Low Gravity Series

Overview

Mariner Brewing – Low Gravity Series Review

In a time of high interest in lighter alcoholic beverage options, there’s a new series of low calorie, low-carbohydrate beers from Coquitlam’s Mariner Brewing. Sporting 150 calories and just two grams of carbs per 473ml can, these brews use rice in the grain bill for a lighter body. They’re targeted at those looking for the craft beer version of “Great Taste, Less Filling”.

Rating a beer like this requires thinking contextually. To draw an analogy: one of the BeerSeekers is a long-time vegetarian who can give you an opinion on all kinds of veggie eating options. Not everybody will appreciate those options. Similarly, not everyone’s mind will be open to a light-bodied beer with dietary benefits, but here at Beer Me BC our minds are like a 24 hour drive-thru: always open. Let’s pop the top and get ready to go low!

GREEN CAN: DRY HOPPED

The Low Gravity beers all share the same base, with alternate flavouring. The first variant we tried, Dry Hopped, poured light gold with some head and minimal retention.

We sampled two cans of it. The first one had a fresh but subdued hop bouquet with a slight spiciness, alongside notes of green melon and cateloupe. The second can, presumably from a different batch, had a stronger, funkier bouquet.

Both were well carbonated and refreshing on the palate, with melon notes and a bit of piney hoppiness.

ORANGE CAN: TANGERINE

The next beer poured the same light gold, but this time there was a strong, fruity aroma. This was courtesy of the addition of tangerine (a relative of mandarin) orange concentrate.

The tangerine concentrate makes for a slightly saccharine, but not sugary, sweetness. One of the BeerSeekers preferred this variant for the fruity flavour.

PINK CAN: LEMONADE

The Pink Lemonade variant of Mariner’s Low Gravity series poured the same gold colour, but had a strong lime presence on the nose and palate.

According to the can, the brew is supplemented by natural pink grapefruit and pink lemonade flavours. Out of the three options, this probably had the most artificial taste. But it would still make an easy-drinking warm weather beer choice.

SUMMARY

Overall, Mariner’s Low Gravity is a refreshing summer beverage option. These light, crisp and dry beverage options should appeal to an increasingly calorie, carb and alcohol-conscious beverage consumer audience.
