Barkerville Brewing – Sluice Juice Hazy Pale Ale

Barkerville Brewing – Sluice Juice Hazy Pale Ale Review

Quesnel’s Barkerville Brewing has a reputation as an extremely solid craft brewery. They’ve reached that distinction by turning out stunning beers in a variety of styles, including High Stakes Imperial IPA and 52 Foot Stout. This year, Sluice Juice Hazy Pale Ale joins their regular offerings as a core brand.

As What’s Brewing magazine contributor Adam Arthur points out, Sluice Juice was featured as a newcomer on BC Ale Trail’s Summer 2019 Best Beers list. Let’s find out what made this brew a top pick for BC beer author Joe Wiebe.

For 2020, the packaging sports a snazzy new look and fully compostable can rings. Once poured, this beer is the typical orangey colour of a hazy IPA or pale, with normal carbonation, head & retention.

This beer has a fantastic aroma and a nice fruity presence. On the nose, we picked out coconut, pineapple and guava amongst its sharp hop aromas. Actually, for a beer that’s not designated an IPA, there’s more hop on the nose than on the palate, which we found juicy and mildly lactic with a mild astringency.

Sluice Juice packs less of a punch-in-the-mouth of hop flavour than most hazy brews you’ve had—since it’s not an IPA. However, that makes it accessible to those who prefer a milder fruity ale. We consider this a highly drinkable beer.

Note: Sluice Juice was recently featured in the Beer Geek program at many BC Liquor Stores.
