Backcountry Brewing – Do You Know The Muffin Man

Backcountry Brewing – Do You Know The Muffin Man Review

Back in January, the BeerSeekers reviewed a set of Backcountry beers that are currently being adding to the Beer Me BC catalog. One of them was Do You Know The Muffin Mandescribed as a kettle sour brewed with 2400 blueberry muffins and 3000lbs of blueberry puree.

Muffin Man is sold out now, but it’s another great example of what Backcountry is capable of. With this sour, they created a beer that tastes like you’re eating heaping spoonfuls of fruit jam. But just because the fruit used is blueberry, don’t expect it to smell or taste only like blueberries. In fact, we got raspberry on the nose and tart berries (think lingonberry, marionberry, gooseberry) on the palate.

In appearance, the brew was still (ie, no head). Colour was a vibrant, deep magenta, like a pinky dark red with a strong blue tint.

On the nose, there was raspberry. The aroma was vinous, reminiscent of a rosé-like blend of white and red wines.

Although this beer was nominally a sour, the dominant flavour was of sweet fruit, like jam. There was subtle cinnamon in the finish. It was vinous, consistent with the aroma.

On the palate, this beer really shone. Bursting with juiciness, it coated the tongue. It was more tart than sour, while at the same time faintly drying & astringent.

This beer is a fruit beer lover’s dream. We would have rated it as “crushable” for everyone if it weren’t for the tartness aspect. But the BeerSeekers both happen to be fruit beer lovers, and we would enjoy pitchers of this beer.
