Twin Sails Brewing – Cookie Jar Oatmeal Fudge Stout Review

PRESENTED BY JAK’S BEER, WINE, SPIRITS
From the Winter  2020 edition of the What’s Brewing
Tasting Panel

For the last few years, we have known Twin Sails Brewing for their creations of full-bodied, citrus, and or tropical fruit-forward IPA’s or DIPA’s, but check out their lineup of stouts!!! From oatmeal stouts to fruit-forward stouts, and imperial stouts, there is a stout for everyone. You won’t find a “basic” stout in the Twin Sails portfolio- these stouts are loaded with chocolate, caramel, coffee,  coconut, fruit purees, and then some are even barrel-aged.

The Cookie Jar oatmeal fudge stout is what I like to call a “dessert beer”, a beer that emanates a favourite indulgence and would be a perfect beer after a nice meal, to sip and savour. This beer is about the chocolate! Rich dark, fudgy chocolate, with just a hint of bitterness. The large addition of oats helps to create a sense of chewiness, giving this beer a creamy mouthfeel and is very reminiscent of those oatmeal cookies dipped in fudge. The added touch is some sea salt, just enough to keep the sweetness from taking over.

Like many dark and rich beers, this beer would be best served after it has been taken out of the fridge and let sit for a bit, and then poured in a tulip or brandy glass. This will help to bring out the flavours and the aromas of the roasted malts and chocolate additions. And what better way to pair this beer but by having some of those chocolate dipped oatmeal cookies? …or, would that be too much  ;-)

Check out the Winter edition of What’s Brewing for five other beers that we felt qualified as a “dessert” beer.
