The BX Press Cidery- Vanilla Plum Review

PRESENTED BY JAK’S BEER, WINE, SPIRITS
From the Spring 2020 edition of the What’s Brewing Tasting Panel

The BX Press Cidery is not a cidery that I had ever heard of, but yet they have been opened since 2013. They are such a small scale and so popular in their home town of Vernon that their cider seldom makes it out of the Okanagan. The BX Press Cidery is named after the Barnard’s Express & Stage Line, one of the oldest, largest, and longest-running stagecoach companies in North America, starting in 1861 delivering letters from Vancouver into the Rockies. Later renamed the BC Express, they owned and operated a 6,000 acre horse ranch called The BX Ranch, which became known as Vernon. Their 3rd generation farm is located on part of this historical land and the BX Press pays homage to this important part of British Colombian history at every opportunity. The orchards were purchased by Franz and Anna Dobernigg in 1946, grandparents to the Dave and Missy. ( See image below with their tank).

The Vanilla Plum cider started out as one of their experimental botanical series,  made with apples, sweet Vernon grown plums and vanilla pods. It was so popular when it was first released in 2017, that it is now a Winter seasonal. This cider pours the colour of rose wine, a warm pinkish hue, with lots of tiny bubbles that maintain some tingles throughout. While the plums are not really noticeable in flavour, aside from a hint of stonefruit, they do help to provide a bit of extra body in the final mouthfeel. The plums also help to cut down on the tartness of the apples and provide an extra bit of sweetness. The addition of vanilla pods in the fermentation is subtle but helps provide a plum pudding/apple pie flavour profile. All in all a nice change from mosy tart and sweet apple only ciders.
