Slackwater Brewing – Making Waves Pineapple Rye Saison Review

The Spring season is not only a season that people look forward to as the outdoors warms up, but, also a promise of many great beer releases. To me, it is the anticipation of all the International Women’s Day beers that were either brewed in February to be released on IWD -March 8th, or brewed on the day of (or close to it) and released in the early Spring.
One of the first beers to be brewed in BC was by Slackwater Brewing in Penticton. This is their second year brewing a Pink Boots Brew using the Yakima Chief Pink Boots Hop Blend, a special blend of 5 hops designed by women in the industry and distributed by Yakima Hops, with $3.00 from each pound going back to the Pink Boots Society towards sponsorships and education for women in the Industry. This year’s recipe was from Carrie Kemp, Assistant Brewer at Slackwater, with the assistance of Head Brewmaster Peter Schultz.  Carri has been wanting to brew a rye Saison with the addition of pineapples, and this year’s hop blend with its tropical aroma seemed to be the perfect fit for her recipe.

Making Waves Pineapple Rye Saison is first and foremost a Belgium Saison style, with that classic estery aroma of pepper and just a hint of clove. The addition of rye gives it some extra spiciness.  Carri has a love for pineapple and felt that the fruit forwardness of the pineapple and the earthiness of the rye would be a perfect balance and would complement this year’s Pink Boots hop blend consisting of Ahtanum (citrus and pine), Cashmere (citrus, peach), Citra (citrus, tropical), Loral (earthy) and Sabro (coconut, tropical). It was a daring move by Carri to bring all these elements together, but they all work well together, making this a complex and enjoyable beer to enjoy. It’s already sold out at the brewery, but you may still be able to get some at one of Jak’s liquor store locations around the province.
