Slackwater Brewing – Deepwater Porter Review

Slackwater Brewing, the sixth brewery to makes its home in Penticton BC opened in the Summer of 2019 under the leadership of husband & wife team Liam and Kelsey Peyton, Jason Mathews (previously with Postmark) and Brewmaster Chris Vandenberg (previously with Postmark and Powell). The brewery itself is impressive, housed in what used to be a two level night club that had been apart of the Penticton downtown core for 20 years! With two Peoples Choice awards from the Fest Of Ale before they even opened (Best Brewery and Best Beer), they are already winning the hearts of the local community!

The Deepwater Porter is an example of the Slackwater philosophy – “simple, balanced and approachable”. This English style porter pours a rich dark brown colour, almost mahogany with a light tan head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is a combination of molasses, chocolate and coffee from the malts with a hint of floral from the East Golding hops. The flavour is a subtle combination of milk chocolate, caramel, molasses and coffee, giving a rounded flavour with the English hops providing just enough bitterness to cut the sweetness level of the malts down. The term “sessionable porter” may not exist, but if it did, this porter would be a good example of that term.
