Salt Spring Wild Cider – Pineapple Amaro Review

PRESENTED BY JAK’S BEER, WINE, SPIRITS
From the Spring 2020 edition of the What’s Brewing Tasting Panel

The days of walking into a liquor store and finding a small selection of apple ciders are gone! Much like the craft beer world, the variety of BC craft ciders has exploded! There are over 30 cideries in BC and the growth continues, especially on the Island and Interior.

And, like the wide variety of beers to try, and styles from sour, to funk to hoppy, so too for the ciders. While local apples are still the main ingredient, it is not unusual to find a variety of fruits, as well as hops and even spirits. There are even ciders that are barrel-aged!

The Pineapple Amaro from Salt Spring Island is part of their Wild Cider “Tropical Series”. It has a combination of pineapple with organic apples and the use of a very interesting Italian bitter -Amaro, an Italian herbal liqueur that is commonly consumed as an after-dinner digestif.

This cider pours a light pineapple yellow colour with a very mousse-like head that disappears quickly. It has a light, refreshing and juicy body. The addition of Amaro, an Italian herbal liqueur used commonly as an after-dinner digestif is unique. The bitterness and light herbal aftertaste cuts down the sweetness of the pineapple and apple juices that is so often associated with ciders in general.  If you are looking for a unique cider to impress your friends, look no further!
