Penticton Beer Week – Community Common Review
October is BC Craft Beer Month and with that there is always at least one beer collaboration in celebration. But this year, in 2019, a new beer week occured – Penticton Beer Week, running during the 3rd week of October, and a second collaboration was brewed!
With the craft beer industry growing in Penticton, there is an even stronger community interest in beer than there has been in the past. Cannery Brewing, Barley Mills and Tin Whistle have been the staples for the last many years but with Bad Tattoo opening in 2014, Highway 97 in 2016, Slackwater in 2019 and Neighbourhood to open in 2020 (but brewing now at Bad Tattoo) the times could not be better for its very own beer week!
The mutual decision between these 7 breweries was to create an approachable and easy drinking beer for year one, and the choice was a California Common ( also known as steam beer, a hybrid style) but with a BC twist. None of the brewers had ever brewed the style either making it a fun experience, and the malt and hops are all from BC! Because Bad Tattoo recently aquired a brand new canning line, it was agreed that the beer would be brewed and packaged there. Partial proceeds of this beer are going to Penticton & Area Cycling Associataion, to help develop and enhance the bike trails and infrastructure. The name of the beer ties all this in ; Community Common. The colourful label art was designed by Super Deluxe Creative, and the labels printed by Summit – both great sponsors for this project.
The beer itself is a medium bodied, malt forward beer with some resiny and citrus notes. It pours a rich copper colour, very clear, light carbonation with a creamy mousse like head of foam that lasts to the end. Because of its malty profile the beer has a caramelly sweetness to it, but thanks to the BC hops, there is just enough bitterness that cuts through to make this beer truly approachable for lager and ale drinkers alike. Sadly, only available in the Okanagan.
