Love Shack Libations-Jaihu Are You? Review
Love Shack Libations is a nano-brewery in Qualicum Beach, BC. One man show, Dave Paul, has teamed up with UVI Anthropology Professor, Dr. Marie Hopwood, to do a series of historical beer reenactments. One of the series is Jaihu Are You?, a rice-based beer inspired around the alcoholic drinks of ancient China. It is brewed with hawthorn berries, sweet orange peel, chrysanthemums, and hibiscus.
Jiahu (pronounced zjoo-hoo) has a strong aroma of bitter and sour berries with a peppery floral undertone. It pours red in colour with a good white head that lingers. It is very well carbonated. It is light-bodied with a smooth creamy mouthfeel. Jiahu has a smooth berry taste, including blueberry and blackberry notes, that is not sweet nor tart. Peeking behind is very soft floral flavours. There is also a hint of vanilla. There are no hops perceivable and little to no bitterness or maltiness. The finish is quick but enjoyable.
