La Cerveceria Astilleros- Acan “Chufa” Horchata Porter

Overview

La Cerveceria Astilleros- Acan “Chufa” Horchata Porter Review

Cyperus esculentus, also called chufa or tiger nut, is cultivated as a snack or much more commonly as an essential ingredient in Aqua de Horchata. Horchata is a plant (often rice) based drink popular in Mexico and Spain. Vanilla and Cinnamon are also common ingredients.

La Cerveceria Astilleros, the Mexican inspired brewery in North Vancouver, has a Horchata flavoured porter called Acan “Chufa” Horchata Porter.  It is black with a medium tan head that lingers. The aroma is roasted barley with notes of vanilla and nuttiness. It is full-bodied with mild carbonation. The flavour really pops with big roasted nuts, vanilla milkshake and a soft roast bitterness. The cinnamon is very faint compared to the bigger flavours until the long finish when a savoury spiciness makes an appearance. The lactose sweetness is subdued and in the background.
