Hoyne Brewing Co.- Bier Garten Altbier

Overview

Hoyne Brewing Co.- Bier Garten Altbier Review

Like kolsch or steam beer, altbier is a hybrid style of beer, neither a lager or an ale but a combination of both. In the case of altbier, which originates from the Dusseldorf area, it is a lagered beer that is fermented with ale yeast. The story goes that while lager was conquering Germany, a small group of holdouts continued to use ale yeast. The beer they brewed was designated Alt which means “old”, or the old style, in German.

Hoyne Brewing‘s altbier, part of their Bier Garten line, is cooper with a ruby red tinge and a good tan head that lingers. The aroma is fluffy nuttiness with some mild peppery hops and fruity esters. It is crisp and has high levels of carbonation. It has a dry maltiness, bread and toffee, also with notes of nuts and pillowy dark fruit. There is low levels of bitterness. It finishes quickly with a very slight maltiness.
