Dominion Cider Co – Dominion Winter Review

Dominion cider is nestled in the town of Summerland, on the west side of Okanagan Lake. The cidery was named after Dominion Experimental Farms, a place that was established in the 1920s in Summerland for studying and developing new apple varieties, as well as growing techniques. Many of the trees grown at the time became known as heritage varieties and were considered to be excellent cider apples. Over the years, many of these orchards were torn out and replaced with vineyards for wine.  When three friends bought the farm, Robin, Luke, and Mike,(with one of them- Mike-  actually working as a field hand one summer at the original farm) they tore out some of those vineyards to re-establish the traditional heritage apple varieties and also added crab and dessert orchards.

The Winter cider is a limited release part of their “Discovery Series”. The aroma is very reminiscent of apple pie, with the use of mulled spices like clove and cinnamon. It pours a light but warm peachy pink colour with very light carbonation. If you are wanting a simple apple cider then this is not the one for you, but if you enjoy warm spices in your drinks you will love this one. I would consider this to be a dessert cider, perfect with some creamy vanilla ice cream and apple pie, a nice cheese platter or would even complement a pork or turkey dish.
