Ravens Brewing Skull Barrel Aged BottleRavens Brewing Co. – Skull Barrel Aged Cassis Saison Review

Ravens Brewing Company in Abbotsford has released two versions of their award winning Farmers Ale, aged in wine barrels.  Skull was aged four months in Merlot barrels with Fraser Valley black currants.  The beer pours from the 750mL bottle a cloudy red colour with 3 fingers of pink head that dissipates slowly leaving some trace lacing on the glass.  A yeasty funk initially hits the nose, along with aromas of dark berries, oak, and earth.  These tones are complemented with notes of herbs, lemon, and a light hay aroma.  In the mouth, the beer offers flavours of wheat, lemon zest, and sweet berry tones, along with oak, mild funk and a slight tartness at the end.  The beer has a creamy, wheaty texture in the mouth and finishes moderately dry.  As a first release from Ravens Brewing’s new barrel program, this beer is a great indication of things to come.
