Steamworks Brewing Co. – Kettle Sour Review
Steamworks has entered the sour game with what they are calling their “Kettle Sour”. The name may not be creative but it nails down what the beer is pretty well. Don’t dig too deep into the label though as you may notice the clever “Bitter, Faster, Stronger” call-out and read too far into the fact that the beer has a very modest 4 bittering units. From the bomber bottle this beer pours a golden-straw colour with two full fingers of head. From this sour beer comes an aroma blend of tartness and tropical fruit. Notes of mango, passion fruit and citrus join the sour bite in a big way. Tasting the beer it has a sharp sourness in the front that is tart and intense. This initial hit builds into the tropical fruit tones that add light sweetness to the flavour. From here the beer takes an abrupt left turn. The wheat content and Pilsner malts take control and give a contrasting, relatively dry finish. The sour and fruit flavours linger slightly but the start and finishing notes are very polarizing.
