Phillips Brewing Co. – Sax In The Dark Dark Sour Ale with Grape Must Review
Phillips Brewing has added to their Sour Note Series of beers with the Sax in the Dark, A Dark Sour Ale brewed with grape must. This rather unique sour beer pours from the bomber bottle a colour of deep reddish brown and has three full fingers f head that leaves light lacing behind on the glass. From the Sax in the Dark comes a malty and sweet aroma with notes of raisins and prunes along side a light sourness. On the nose this beer is not overly sour. Tasting the beer it too has a malty backbone to prop up a mildly sour beer. The dark notes of raisins and dried fruit give body and a rich back for the sour notes to prop up on. The flavour is well balanced between sour, sweet and malty flavours making for a darker than typical sour ale that remains beer first, sour a close second and rather enjoyable throughout the ordeal.

Good timing on the review, I was just sitting down at the computer to enjoy a glass of this beer when I saw your review.
Unfortunately this beer is a disappointment to me. Lately I’ve been trying various sour beers from Powell St. and Fuggles and Warlock, and I’ve enjoyed them all. I can’t say the same for Phillips Sax in the Dark. As you say in the review, this beer isn’t very sour. I was also expecting more of a grape flavour.
