Deep Cove Brewers & Distillers- Luminescent Chocolate Coconut Porter Review
The first new beer to be released with the updated Deep Cove Brewers’ style is the Luminescent, a Chocolate Coconut Porter. Labelled with an image of jellyfish that are known to light up the waters of Deep Cove with their bio-luminescents the new branding pays tribute to the brewery’s backyard. Speaking of local, the coconuts in this beer were even roasted in the ovens at the brewery’s neigbour, Community Pizzaria. Pouring the beer from its 650ml bottle it appears near black in colour and is topped by two fingers of off white head. The head settles slowly leaving light traces on the glass and smells strongly of toasted malt, chocolate and of course a semi-sweet coconut aroma. Tasting the beer a mid body and light carbonation lead into a delicate balance of chocolate and coconut flavour. Like a Bounty chocolate bar the chocolate and coconut flavours work together while a nicely toasted malt tone reminds us that this is a beer, not a dessert. In fact the sweetness is rather mellow given the flavour combination. This is a delicious coconut porter that lets the coconut flavour shine!
