A hop forward ipa that also has a nice, mid-sweet malt character

  • Conclusion:

A hoppy, but balanced BC-style IPA

The Vancouver Special is the name of a type of house that Vancouverites are not all that proud of. While the housing style was lackluster and rather uncreative, the Vancouver Special IPA is a big and sturdy beer that will likely stand the test of time (just like the houses did). From the Bomber bottle this East Van Original series beer pours as a light amber colour topped with two fingers of lacing head. From the beer comes a citrus-fruit explosion of aroma in a big and northwest-style package. The beer has a mid body to it had has a fairly big malt profile despite the hop forward nature of the aroma. Tasting the beer it is a combination of malt tones with an almost honey-like sweetness along side the citrus fruit tones and light tropical flavours as well. The hops are strong but not as big as you may expect given the label that declares the Vancouver Special “A hop dominant IPA”. The Vancouver Special is a nice balance of flavours in a beer that’s profile is designed for the Vancouver based beer drinker that loves hops but also wants more from their local craft beer.
