The brewing team at Spinnaker’s Brewpub in Victoria BC has some tricks up their sleeve and with that comes some very unique beer styles. The Orange Karma is an Oatmeal Cream Ale that was brewed with orange peel, five types of hops, flaked oats and lactose. From the rather sparkly labelled bottle this beer pours as a straw colour topped with a finger’s worth of head. If you thought from the name that this beer would come out like a creamcicle you were mistaken. The aroma is a orange peel infused hop experience. The bitter-sweet spice from the orange peel blends with a citrus and pine hop tone while the lactose seams to give a light creaminess to the aroma. Without knowing what this beer is ahead of time I do not think I would have guessed Oatmeal Cream Ale. The body of this beer is quite unique. While the beer is quite light in colour the texture is creamy and relatively thick from the oats and lactose content. The Orange peel comes into play early but fades quickly into a bigger than expected hop experience. A spruce-like hop tone takes charge with a light citrus note while the orange sweetness lingers. The name of this beer may scare you but it is not what you think. It is a creamy, hop forward ale with a light and refreshing orange peel flavour.
