Whistler Brewing Co. – Dubbel Down Belgian Dubbel Review
The Whistler Brewing Company has turned a new leaf for BC breweries. While many breweries are stepping into bombers and cans, Whistler is doing something different. In their Unique Brew Limited Edition Small Batch series comes the Dubbel Down, A Belgian Dubbel. What is truly unique is actually the packaging though as the beer comes in a Boston Round, 950ml bottle. While you may think this is just a brewery fill the label actually places the best before date at January 2016, some 6 months from bottling thanks to a CO2 fill.
When you open this beer and crack through the seal it pours from the bottle as a slightly cloudy, copper-brown colour with one finger of head which settles fairly quickly. From the Dubbel Down comes an aroma of toasted malt, light caramel and toffee along with a light touch of dried fruit consisting of fig and raison notes. The body is fairly big compared to the nose with a fairly strong carbonation. The toasted flavour builds with a dark fruit backing along side a touch of boozyness. The alcohol content is high at 7.5% but adds a smoothness to the body and has a bit of a bite. The finish has a light, dried fruit sweetness to it which is both smooth and flavourful. The Whistler Brewing Company has upped their game here with a great tasting Belgian Dubbel that is unique not just in flavour, but also in its packaging.
