In a barrel aged twist from Townsite Brewing Inc.’s usual style and brews comes a simple and elegantly labeled Barrel Aged Oatmeal Stout. Signed on the bottle by brewmaster Cedric himself this is a good sign that this beer is of extremely limited quantities. That or Cedric has a very sore hand… From the bottle this Oatmeal Stoup pours as a very dark brown colour letting no light through whatsoever. Topped with a thick finger of lacing head this Powell River brewed beer smells dark with chocolate notes, a strong oaked aroma and a kick of bourbon. The beer smells much stronger than the mellow 5.5% alcohol and 30 IBUs. The taste is smooth and light but still has some bite to it. A creamy, chocolaty body with a light touch of vanilla is melded with an oaked-bourbon flavour to give a complex and delicious taste. Uniquely, the bourbon tones mellow rather quickly leaving way for the oak and creamy chocolate flavours to linger. Cedric has done a fantastic job of melding big, barrel aged flavour with a beer that is not over the top. The result is complex and strong flavours in a package that remains light and for the style, very sessionable. If you can find this limited edition brew, you will not be disappointed, it is fantastic.
