Phillips Brewing Co. – Twisted Oak Stillage Barrel Reserve Rauchbier Review
Next in line from Phillips Brewing Company’s Twisted Oak Stillage line is the Barrel Aged Rauch. This is a Rauchbier style ale aged in whiskey barrels until perfection was achieved, then it was bottled for your drinking pleasure. This beer pours a deep chestnut brown colour topped with three fingers of loosely packed head. As this thick top settles it leaves a thick layer of lacing on the glass. The aroma is not all that strong yet it still has an intensity of smoke and whiskey oak barrel infusion. This is along side a malty, lightly toasted aroma with a touch of european-esque hop and pepper. The flavour kicks off with toasted malt in a big-lager kind of way. This builds into a smoked mid section. The smoke actually masks much of the whiskey barrel flaovurs but that is expected as Rauchbier actually means smoked beer in German. Overall The smoke tends to take over slightly masking the other flavours but if you like the smoke with some subtle tones along side then this is the beer for you.
