Vancouver Island Brewery - Black Betty Blackberry Saison Review

Vancouver Island Brewing – Black Betty Blackberry Saison Review

The Black Betty is a fruit-saison using BC grown Blackberries to create a unique, seasonal saison. This beer pours a golden-amber colour with two fingers of head. The head settles very quickly with no signs of lacing on the glass. The smell coming off this beer is crisp and slightly sharp. Blackberry tones add a sourness to the scent alongside a crisp, lightly sweetened body. The flavour is surprisingly smooth and pleasant without being overly sweet. The blackberry tones are right upfront but don’t add the sour tones that you may expect. The malted base starts out strong with light berry tones building. As the taste progresses the blackberry comes right to the front leaving the palate with a fairly sweet, blackberry finish. The end to this beer may be a little sweet-and-fruity for some but it is a great representation of BC blackberries blended craftfully with a delicious saison.

We couldn’t even finish the cans. My friend took one sip and spit it out. Tastes like old bread and balogna, just disgusting.

This years version is 5.5% interestingly enough…I am not a huge blackberry fan, this added too much sweetness for me to rate higher. Not bad, but not great either.

Will – old bread and baloney….really?????

Enjoyed this beer at the beer Festival. Have been trying to locate it in Vernon, BC to purchase.
