Russell Brewing Co. – Nautical Disaster Barleywine Review

The proud winner of the Golden Stag Home Brewing Competition had the opportunity to work with The Russell Brewing Company to produce the Nautical Disaster Barleywine. This opaque, copper coloured ale pours with a single finger of head and smells of tropical fruit, pine hops and the slightest of booze. For a Barley wine weighing in at an impressive 9.3% the aroma is actually quite pleasant. The first bit of flavour teases the senses in an almost mild, toasted medley of flavours. This quickly builds into a bold, hop bittered, toasted sweet middle and a boozy finish. There are some notes of passion fruit and mango that seem to be hiding in there somewhere but play second string the the hop bitterness and liquor tones. As intense as this sounds it is actually fairly pleasant and quite mild for a barley wine. I was a little concerned when I decided to drink a Barley Wine in August but this beer is enjoyable, flavourful and more mellow than expected.

Alcohol – 9.3%
IBU – 60
