Russell Brewing Co. – Rick August Russian Imperial Stout Review

The Rick August Russian Imperial Stout is best scooped out of the bottle using a spoon. It is extremely thick and resembles tar as it emerges from its bottle. This black hole of a beer let’s no light through and the head is a thick and a deep, chocolate brown. The aroma is strong and in your face with a bit of alcolol-ness that comes through. There are notes of chocolate and hop that mellow out the beer’s robust nature. The Extra-Strong beer classification is well deserved; at 10.8% the tongue cringes slightly and almost gives the urge to cough slightly upon tasting. Don’t get me wrong, the Russian imperial stout is a decent beer and does not stray far from what it should be. The flavour has notes of chocolate, licorice and juniper while its 86 IBU rating gives a distinct bitterness in the finish.

This beer is definitely unique and only for the few that can handle a beer with this much power in its punch. Pick up a bottle and share it with a few friends. The whole bottle may be a tad much but a taste will never hurt.
