Red Collar Brewing Co. – Afterglow India Pale Lager Review
The IPL is not a typical beer style but makes a ton of sense from a BC craft beer frame of view. The India Pale Lager is a hop forward take on the Lager beer style. Red Collar’s Afterglow IPL comes in a brightly coloured bomber themed after the Luminocity Festival. Pouring this beer it is gold in colour and has two full fingers of lacing head that settles slowly on top the beer. The aroma is hoppy with notes of citrus, mango and passionfruit coming from the mosaic hops. Tasting this beer it is malty with a slight lager-creaminess to the mouthfeel. Along side the malty base comes a fairly bitter hop character. The bitterness masks some of the fruit flavour but the mango notes add a light sweetness and tropical tone to the beer. While 41 IBU may not seem like a lot with a light, low alcohol lager base the bitterness is quite strong and makes this true to the name of being the lager equivalent of an IPA.
