Phillips Brewing Co. - Super Cooper 14th Anniversary Ale Review Phillips Brewing Co. – Super Cooper Fourteenth Anniversary Ale Review

For their 14th birthday Phillips Brewing Company broke their tradition of matching the year with the alcohol percentage of the beer. That does not mean that this year’s beer does not pack a serious punch though. At 11.6% the Super Cooper was barrel aged for a year and dry hopped to up the anti. On the label they do not even label the beer as having a style. After a year in the bourbon barrels and bottled into 650ml bomber bottles this beer pours as a very slightly opaque amber-gold colour topped with three fingers of heavily lacing, slow to settle head. The Super Cooper smells strongly of bourbon oak and a subtle maltiness. Given the strength of the beer the aroma is actually rather mild. The beer’s body is smooth and creamy with a fairly strong carbonation. The flavour is rich with smooth malt and deep oak flavours and a bourbon tone that builds in intensity. As the finish approaches the bourbon-oak is joined by vanilla and hop tones that give a lingering bitterness at the back of the tongue. The beer is quite strong and intense but does not have the booziness that often comes with a beer that has such a high alcohol level. All things fair, the Super Cooper is relatively sessionable by massive 10%+ barrel aged beers.
