Dageraad Time’s Arrow Barrel-Aged Saison

Overview

Dageraad Time’s Arrow Barrel-Aged Saison Review

Dageraad Brewing has doubled the size of its barrel aging program in the past couple of years, and this season they are busting out with not one but three specialty releases in the space of a month.

The first, a Saison dubbed Time’s Arrow, is a collaboration between Dageraad, Ryan Voigt, and Neck of the Woods Honey. Aged for 18 months in red wine barrels, it’s the subject of the first of a trio of reviews we’ve lined up for you.

Arrow pours a somewhat cloudy gold with a tight but quickly-dissipating head. On the nose there’s a distinct reminder of the red wine its wood used to encompass.

On the palate, that aging lends a slightly puckering vinous experience. Carbonation is soft and fairly dense. There’s a vigourous acetic sensation on the palate that gets your saliva glands going.

There’s just enough malt backbone to help this beer stand up to the tartness. As for the honey: its effect is super subtle. Don’t expect a honey blonde here; if you can detect its sweetness, it’s just a background note.

Time’s Arrow isn’t a beer for crushing by the pitcher. Thanks to the barrel bite, expect it to go down slower than your garden variety Saison. Having said that, this is by no means a challenging beer, and it’s accessible enough to be enjoyed by anyone open to a fresh-tasting Belgian style.
