Victoria’s Harvest Celebration of Fresh Hop Beers

Saturday, October 10, 2015 – 2:00pm to 7:00pm

Outdoors at Driftwood Brewery/Hoyne Brewing — 450 Hillside Avenue, Victoria BC

Generously sponsored by Liquor Plus.

Event Details:

As any fan of craft beer knows, with the arrival of fall comes the annual harvest of the mighty hop. Many BC craft breweries celebrate this time of the season by brewing beers with hops that are as fresh as it gets.

Driftwood Brewery and Hoyne Brewing are well known for their fresh hop beers so we decided to gather some of BC’s best breweries in their shared parking lot for a celebration of these unique seasonal beers.

What is Fresh Hop Beer?

Hops are one of the four main ingredients in craft beer. They act as a preservative and provide aroma and flavour depending on their style and way they are used in the brewing process. Most of the hops used in brewing have been dried and pelletized following harvest so they can be transported and stored for months to come.

But fresh hop (or “wet hopped”) beers are brewed with hops that are fresh from the harvest, usually within 24 hours of being picked. Breweries need to expedite the hops as quickly as possible from the bines to the kettle in order to maximize the aroma, resins and flavour. The resulting fresh hop beers are unique to this post-harvest time and offer nuance, flavour and character unattainable through other periods of the year.

For more information on Driftwood Brewery’s Sartori Harvest IPA, which was the first fresh hop beer brewed in BC back in 2009 and has been brewed annually ever since watch this video.
