Steel & Oak Brewing has released the Kataja as a limited release brew. Made with Juniper this is a Gin-twist on a sessionable dark ale. From the bomber bottle this beer pours as a chestnut colour and is topped with a thick finger of dense and lacing head. From the Kataja comes an aroma or toasted malt, light smoke, and a bit of a Juniper-Gin like kick. When you think of a Juniper Ale you may not imagine a beer that is this malty or dark but it smells quite nice. Tasting the beer it has a mid-body and is quite malty. Toasted malt tones, light caramel and toffee and a bit of a hop tone lead into the Juniper tones that build in the later moments of the taste. The Juniper builds along side a light piney hop giving a bit of a citrus kick. The Kataja does not have the Gin tones than you may expect but does have a distinct Juniper character that adds to the malty and lightly sweet base.
