Ravens Brewing Company – Oldhand Coffee IPA Review
Ravens Brewing in Abbotsford, BC has partnered with Oldhand Coffee for their Coffee IPA. This IPA was ‘dry-hopped’ using coffee beans to provide a distinct coffee aroma and flavour in a style that is not typically associated with those flavours. The beer pours from the bomber bottle a clear, medium amber-reddish colour with three fingers of lasting, lacing head. The initial aromas are of grass, and a hind of coffee and acidity. When poured cold, the coffee aroma is more prominent, but at a warmer temperature the coffee aroma is subdued and grapefruit aromas from the hops take centre stage. This IPA proves to be a full-bodied IPA coming in at 6% alcohol with some biscuit malt flavours up front. Fruit flavours of apple and mild citrus replace the malts after the initial taste. The finish is hops with a very mild coffee flavour that seem to compete, back and forth, on the tongue. The bitterness lingers on the tongue long after the coffee has dissipated and leaves a residual dryness in the mouth. This is a good IPA that is drinkable any time, but drink it cooler to ensure more of the coffee flavours come through.
