Coal Harbour Blackwing Baltic Porter Review Coal Harbour Brewing Co. – Blackwing Baltic Porter Review

The Baltic Porter is not an extremely common beer to find in British Columbia. The style is a melding of a traditional Porter with the influence of an Imperial Stout. In this case it resulted in a beer that comes in at 7.5% alcohol. In a bomber bottle the Blackwing pours into the glass with a single thin finger of lacing-brown head and shows its colour of stout-like blackness. From the appearance this seems to be a rather heavy and strong beer. Smelling the Blackwing it gives off aromas of smoke, caramel, chocolate and the dried fruits like you may expect in a Dubbel. Moving to the flavour the body is quite big with a smooth texture to the beer along side a light carbonation level. The smoke tones stand out above other flavours but still leaves room for a strong chocolate flavour and toasted malt tone to come through. The dried fruit flavours are also relatively present, especially with the chocolate notes in the beer’s finish. The Blackwing is smooth and more than you may expect for a Porter, but it is a Baltic variety remember.
