The first thing that you need to ask when it comes to the Steamworks Winter White Stout is, what the heck is a White Stout? Despite what you may think, this is not a wheat beer. Brewed with oats and barley it is designed to give some of the notes that tend to be associated with a Stout while being infused with cacao and coffee beans to up the anti. Technically this is not a stout but as an emerging hybrid style of beer it is rather interesting. From the bomber bottle the beer pours as a golden colour topped with a very thin fingers worth of head. Looking at the beer it appears as a golden ale or something quite light. The aroma however is strong with coffee and cocoa notes. The nose is rather dry though with little in the way of sweetness coming through. The beer has a light body to it and the flavour is rather unique. At first the beer tastes light and malty while a coffee note builds. From fairly early on the main fiddle is coffee tones while the light bitter-sweetness of cocoa beans mellows the coffee’s sharpness. The cocoa tones don’t add much sweetness into the equation but a slight caramel tone adds some body and gives an earthy sweetness to the beer. Overall this is very coffee forward and not really a stout but it is rather tasty and you may just find that you enjoy it.
