Russell Brewing Co. – Farm Fresh Hopped IPA Review
One of the final fresh hop releases to hit liquor store shelves in BC is the Russell Brewing Company’s Farm Fresh IPA. Brewed using fresh Centennial, Cascade and Chinook hops from Chilliwack Hop Farms this is a true BC-style fresh hopped IPA. From the bomber bottle this Surrey brewed beer pours into the glass as an orange-amber colour and is topped with a finger and a half of lacing head. On the nose this beer is rather malt forward with a well hopped back. Notes of citrus, pineapple and pine join the smooth malt tones to make for a rather intoxicating aroma. The fresh hop tones are not over the top but seem to soften the smells and give an overall lightness to the beer. The flavour starts off with the fresh hop flavour. A grassy, piney tone joins the citrus, tropical fruit and pine notes up front while a malty mid-section grows in the background. As the malt comes onto stage the initial hop tones fade and make way for a hop-bittered finish. The final notes have a light grassy tone from the fresh hops along with a lingering malt-body and deep hop bitterness. The Farm Fresh IPA is a nice, well balance, BC-style IPA with a big of fresh hop kick to spruce things up.
