Phillips Brewing Co. – 2015 Crookeder Tooth Barrel Aged Pumpkin Ale Review
Phillips Brewing Company has brought back their bigger and stronger Pumpkin Ale, the Crookeder Tooth. As a barrel aged, strong and spiced beer there are some die hard followers out there that love this beer. Pouring this fall-seasonal beer from the bomber bottle it appears in the glass as an amber, somewhat pumpkin coloured beer. Topped with three full fingers of head the Crookeder Tooth lets off an aroma of big spices including nutmeg and cinnamon. A slight oakiness comes into play but it is rather subdued hinting that the beer may be aged for less time than it has been in the past. The beer is smooth but much lighter bodied than you may expect. In past years the beer has been much more intense but has been scaled back for 2015. The cinnamon and nutmeg flavours add a nice but mellow pumpkin-pie like spice to the beer and the oak gives a touch of bourbon, earthiness and vanilla to the body. Overall the 2015 Crookeder Tooth is quite nice but not the big, barrel aged behemoth that it has been in the past.
