Dead Frog Brewery – One Eyed Jack Imperial Pilsner Review

Dead Frog Brewery has once again upped their limited edition brewing releases with the rare-by-BC-standards Imperial Pilsner Style. Called the One Eyed Jack, this is strong even by Imperial Pilsner standards at a big 8.0% alcohol. From the (slightly ironic) red, white and blue labelled bomber bottle the beer pours as a crisp, golden straw colour topped with two thick fingers of dense and nicely lacing head. The One Eyed Jack looks really good! From the dense head comes nice notes of Pilsner malt, biscuit, citrus and a light hop bitterness. A true Pilsner aroma comes through on the nose but with a bit of extra oomph behind it as you may expect. The body is big with a creaminess to it from the high alcohol content. The flavour masks the alcohol very well though and given the strength it may just sneak up on you. A nice malt tone is joined by a refreshing citrus note and grass-like flavour. As the finish approaches a light bitterness joins the citrus flavours in a refreshing and delicious way. The One Eyed Jack is a delicious example of a big bodied, big flavoured Imperial Pilsner.
