Steamworks Brewing Co. – Kolsch Lagered Ale Review

Steamworks Brewing Company is one of the few breweries in British Columbia that are using 500ml cans. The award winning Steamworks Kolsch has been canned and is now available at top craft beer retailers across BC or at the brewery in Burnaby. From the tall-boy can the Kolsch pours as a crisp, clear golden colour with one finger of head. As the relatively thin head disperses it leaves no signs of lacing behind on the glass. A fresh, malt-forward aroma comes off the beer with straw, lemon, and light German hop tones making up the smell. The taste is very smooth for a Kolsch with a light creaminess hitting the tongue. The malt flavours come through strong with a light sweetness tied to it. As the flavour progresses light hop tones come through and bite at the back of the tongue while the sweetness lingers and adds balance to the flavour. The Steamworks Kolsch is a great example of the traditional German style and a delicious beer to enjoy on a warm BC summer’s day.

Must be enjoyed with the right type of glass, available eg at Lee Valley. Relatively narrow and tall flutes of 200 ml have a significant influence on the taste ( head also remains longer)
