Driftwood Brewing Co. – 2015 Obscuritas Dark Sour Review
When Driftwood Brewing Company brews a new beer British Columbia gets excited, when that beer is a sour ale, it becomes a celebration. The brewing Team at driftwood has released the Obscuritas, a Dark Sour Ale labeled with an eerie looking Owl staring you down. From the bomber bottle this highly anticipated brew pours as a dark, chestnut brown colour with a thin finger of head which settles quickly and without a trace. The aroma is sharp, dark and rich. Notes of dried fruit come with a distinct, rich sour bite. A sweetness comes with the dried fruit notes in what shares some of the characteristics of a Belgian Dubbel. A wine-oakiness also adds an additional level of complexity to the beer. The flavour is sharp, well carbonated and packs a punch. The initial flavour is a sweet and sour medley that mellows to let the sweetness, candi sugar and dark fruit flavours come through. The finish is quite dry and has a woodiness to it. The Obscuritas is a big and strong flavoured sour that will surely be a favourite for sour fanatics. It may be a touch strong for the sour naive but give it some time and they too may just like it!
