From the Saanich Peninsula just outside of Victoria BC is Category 12 Brewing and one of their staple beers is the Unsanctioned Saison. As a fairly strong 6.9% beer the Unsanctioned will surely have a bit of an extra Belgian kick in the always sessionable, Saison style. The bottle is labelled with a chemistry-inspired design and from the bottle this beer pours as a light golden-amber colour topped with two full fingers of thick and lacing head. An aroma of wheat, pepper spice and Belgian yeast tones comes through in a lightly sweet smell. The flavour is crisp with a bigger than typical body for a Saison. A pepper spice, light citrus and a kick of hop bitterness grabs the palate in a wheat and Belgian-yeast flavoured Saison. This is a big and flavourful saison with a bit of an extra hop bitterness from what you may expect. Category 12 may be the newcomers to the BC craft beer scene but science doesn’t lie and the beer is delicious.
