The 2014 Dead Frog Commander Imperial Stout has been reformulated to be more drinkable without aging but to still have the opportunity of improvement through cellaring over the coming years. This big and bold imperial stout pours into the glass a deep black colour topped with two fingers of thick and lacing head. Through this head comes a strong aroma consisting of molasses, star anise, and a light oaked scent. Despite being ranked at 10.5% the smell does not depict an overly boozy beer. The flavour starts off with a thick and heavy texture that is strong with molasses. A sense of high alcohol content comes with the creamy texture but the molasses seems to mask the potency quite well. Much like the aroma a star anise tone comes into play with a light oakiness along side.  The molasses plays front of stage through the whole ordeal and much as planned, this is a better option in its youth than we have seen in the past. The strength of the molasses makes for a smoother beer right off the bat. We can only speculate at this point but the oak, light chocolate and creamy texture will likely improve with time as well. My suggestion – pick up a few bottles of this potent but delicious brew. Enjoy one now and watch it improve over the next couple of years. An enjoyable yet cellar-able beer is not easy to achieve but dead frog brewing has done it with the 2014 Commander Imperial Stout.
