Townsite Brewing Inc. – Blackberry FestivAle (2013) Review

Tying in with the Powell River Blackberry Festival is the Townsite Brewing Inc.’s Blackberry FestivAle. Townsite defines this beer as “a seasonal fruit beer brewed annually to celebrate the favourite fruit of Powell River.” When you pour this beer you will notice a cloudy suspension of wheatiness in a golden-amber coloured concoction. The head is approximately 2 1/2 fingers thick and settles fairly slowly leaving a small amount of lacing on the glass. Through this murky looking ale comes a fairly wheaty smell with notes of blackberry, orange peel and a touch of coriander. For being a fruit beer this is fairly mellow and light in aroma. The flavour kicks off with a smooth and fairly light wheat tone, this builds into a lightly sweetened hint of blackberry alongside a citrus-orange peel supporting number. As far as fruit beers go, this one is top notch in my books. While many similarly inspired beers can end up jam-like or resembling cider this stays true to its wheat beer roots but adds a slight twist of blackberries into the equation.
