Firehall Brewery – Holy Smoke Stout Review

Firehall Brewery is located in Oliver BC and solely produces beer for kegs and growler fills; recently they have started releasing a small quantity of bottles to local, Okanagan retailers. Pouring a near black colour a single finger of coffee coloured head tops the beer. A strong smell of wood smoke, toasted malt, English hops and coffee come on the nose in a slightly campfire-like aroma. The flavour starts off with a toasted malt body and a light smoke flavour. This mild smoke builds as the taste evolves creating a strong wood-smoke mid-section that rolls forward to the finish. A touch of nut, coffee and English style hop balance out the equation. This may not be the smokiest ale out there but it is definitely quite strong. This is that perfect point where the flavour is strong, bold and intense but does not mask the other flavours. What can easily become one dimensional remains having depth of flavour and a great enjoyability factor.  This beer may not be easy to come across but if you are in wine country and happen to find a bottle or even stop in at the brewery for a visit be sure to try this beer.
