Howe Sound Brewing – Father John’s Winter Ale Review

The Father John Winter ale is a deep chestnut brown colour that is topped with a finger and a half of head. The smell is spicy and smooth with notes of nutmeg, allspice and vanilla. Tasting the beer it is not as creamy as I would have guessed from the smell but the spices come through strong. A toasted malt is paired with nuttiness cinnamon, nutmeg and molasses. This winter beer is tasty and easy drinking if you do not mind some winter spice to warm you. Then again, If you didn’t want a spicy and warming ale, you shouldn’t have bought a winter…

More spicy than sweet which I personally prefer. I found that the nutmeg and molasses flavours overpowered everything else though. Overall still a good beer, but to reflect the articles comments its definitely not as smooth as you’d expect.

True, the nutmeg and molassis took over a bit but still a nice warming, winter ale.
