Four Winds Brewing has released an ale that has been aged in a foeder for six months with candi sugar, kumquats and orange peels while fermenting on wild yeast. Pouring from the 750ml bottle this brew is slightly hazy, amber coloured and has three fingers of lacing head. The aroma is autumnal with strong notes of bitter-sweet orange, apricot and an almost cinnamon-like spice. The Brett-yeast notes add further depth to the stone fruit notes in a somewhat confusing but delicious aroma. Tasting the beer there is an initial sweetness right off the bat that leads into the orange peel, stone fruit and Brett character. The Orange comes across again in a bitter-sweet fashion that has an almost liqueur like flavour to it. The Bitterness of the orange lingers behind while dried apricot and nectarine flavours settle. The fruit in this beer takes a big role in the flavour and unles you know what a kumquat tastes likes may leave you a bit confused. The Orange takes on a strong role though giving a strong lingering orange peel flavour that will hold you off until your next sip.
